FEMINICIDE: THE SAME OLD STORY EVERY TIME
Given that we’re once again in an uproar over yet another case of feminicide – the same dynamics, just with different names and cities – today’s article is dedicated to this topic.
As you already know, I don’t watch the news; there’s such an overload of information that the news reaches you even without watching a news programme. And, as always, there’s the echo on social media: a well-known figure using some event to denounce what has happened; the relentless TV programmes that will exploit the case to boost ratings and sow even more division in society; and, last but not least, the chorus of politicised voices demanding that emotional and sexual education be taught in schools.
Is this how it always goes when there’s a femicide? Indeed, for some time now, the anti-feminists have joined in, insisting that many men also suffer violence at the hands of women. In short, it’s all a big shambles. The topic has become as lucrative as the starving child in Africa. I know what I’m writing is heavy going, but it’s true.
It’s as true as the women who die at the hands of a former partner, and as vast as the number of women who suffer domestic violence (psychological and/or physical) but don’t report it.
My mother used to say to me: ‘Don’t complain because there are people who are worse off.’ Folk wisdom? The wisdom of the youngest among us, of those invisible members of society who already know that, as well as a tough battle, isolation and the community’s gossip await them. Well, my dears, it’s easier said than done.
The issue of domestic violence is so new to society that we’re ill-equipped to deal with it and resolve it. By this I’m not saying it’s never existed – quite the opposite!!! What’s new is that women have started to reject this social norm, because domestic violence has always existed, but women (and society as a whole) used to accept it.
There has been such a profound evolution in women that society has been caught off guard.
Just like anyone who has decided to better themselves, to demand more and dared to shine, they have not been understood and have often been punished. And if we look at this evolution of women in relation to men, friction is inevitable, albeit to varying degrees. That degree varies depending on that man’s personal development – that is, on the examples set by his family upbringing.
My dears, it is the family and its internal dynamics that shape that son, and indeed that daughter too.
If the family atmosphere was one of hatred and oppression, masked as self-sacrifice for love, the results will not be all that different. So let’s not go looking for laws or the much-maligned school system to teach emotional and sexual education.
Let’s stop shirking our responsibilities; the 1960s are long gone. Not least because here are the rotten fruits of those years: no one taking responsibility, a lack of respect for institutions (which, as it happens, you now want to teach emotional education to young people), the confusion of freedom with immorality and abuse of power, and so on and so forth…
It’s pointless for us to demand laws if there isn’t a way of life based on respect for others. The state could pass a law every day, but if we live in a society characterised by utter indifference, what good will all those words do?
We are at the beginning of a great human evolution, because it concerns us all: men and women. We are better than this distorted social image; it will take a great deal of effort and time – a great deal of time – to overcome it… the truth is essential for healing. But the fact that we are talking about it and that the subject outrages us is a good start, and if each of us does our bit, we can certainly move towards a more cohesive and responsible society.
