ONE DAY YOU’LL LOOK BACK AND BE GRATEFUL YOU DIDN’T GIVE UP

This Friday’s post is dedicated to the creative process behind the Baxter Blog. It’s already been a week since Baxter and I took off from Anzio and left behind an old life that had run its course. Some of you will already have heard about this from the BEHIND THE SCENES reel, which is posted every Tuesday at 7.30 pm on the Baxter Blog’s social media channels – I’d encourage you to follow them if you haven’t already.

So, on 10 September, I arrived in Milan to start a new chapter in my life. What can I say? This year I’m turning forty – a very significant milestone. It’s a turning point; now I need to give it my all and make choices that will help me achieve a sense of fulfilment in life.

I’d already had this in mind for the summer of 2025; in fact, whilst walking the Camino de Santiago, whenever I met someone from Milan I’d ask for their number, because I was planning to move there in September. Well, I got the year wrong! And with my wish list a year behind schedule, here I am now, finding my way. Ah, did you think I’d be moving with my whole life already sorted? No, let’s not kid ourselves – I’m a Christian, so the idea of everything being handed to me on a plate isn’t part of the plan. After all, He’s always told all His followers: Follow Me.

Instead, I’d like to explore and bear witness, through my own experience, to the importance of the unexpected. Back in September 2025, I had more financial resources than I do today to make this move to Milan, but I lacked the right energy, which faded in an instant following the cancellation of an artistic work engagement that meant a great deal to me—in fact, one on which I’d staked everything. Indeed, when A.C.’s phone stopped ringing, my world came crashing down, and with it, my decision to move to Milan.

So I carry on living in a state of utter emptiness in Anzio, without a job and with no certainties left. On the plus side, for a year, my father and I had my brothers and their families staying with us – first the eldest and then the youngest. And during those months, I realised just how different we all are, and what a vital role my mother played in keeping such different people united as a family. Ah, for those who don’t know, my mother passed away five years ago.

And in this year of emptiness, I realise that I am living a life that isn’t my own, where I am playing a role that doesn’t belong to me. At home, I’m the ‘problem daughter’: especially because I’m forty, unmarried and don’t have a secure job. In my religious community, I’m treated like the mascot or the daughter – still! And everyone else is just an acquaintance to whom I say ‘good morning’, ‘thank you’ and ‘goodbye’. Well, what can I say? I didn’t need anything else to realise I had to leave. But in fact, the realisation that this was the right choice came during a discussion with my father, whom I’ll never stop thanking. During that discussion, it dawned on me that I was in a film I’d already seen, one I had to walk away from, with no more excuses.

And so the next day, absent-mindedly, I searched online for temporary accommodation in Milan, and I don’t know how they managed it, but the following afternoon they rang me about a studio flat, and so the day after that, without further delay, I took it.

I had those two weeks to carry out the most thorough decluttering of my life. During those days, I realised just how much I’d filled all that emptiness with clothes, bits and bobs, and above all, books. That move taught me the difference between what’s important and essential, and what isn’t. I lived out that saying about letting go of the old to make way for the new. I trusted the process. I gave away books – which were a priceless treasure to me – and clothes to those in need, thinking that we’re all in the same boat. I sold furniture that I thought would be with me for the rest of my life. So I packed the essentials for this new life into three suitcases and a rucksack. During this run-up, I also had to make the decision to resign from the Teresian Carmelite community in Anzio, of which I was a lay member.

What can I say – quite a change! It was like shaving my head, but it was necessary to step into this new phase of my life… my hair will grow back.

Of course, 97% of the people in my life didn’t understand my decisions, but it doesn’t really matter. In fact, as part of that decluttering process, I threw away the importance of other people’s opinions.
