In una società che ha sfruttato il corpo della Donna per qualunque iniziativa, che quasi sempre ci è stata fatta passare per emancipazione, o ancora più tristemente per arte, ovviamente mi riferisco ai patinati ed esclusivi calendari, vi presento Ana Mendieta. Performer, artista e donna dalle profonde radici spirituali.
Da una formazione pittorica classica, trova la sua espressione artistica nella Body Art e la Land Art, con la quale fa emergere la sua spiritualità sudamericana. Nasce a Cuba nel 1948, ma vive per il resto della sua vita in America. Due stili di vita differenti, ma necessari per diventare l’artista che tutti noi apprezziamo;
sarà attraverso la sua produzione artistica che cercherà di guarire le ferite di questo esilio.
Come ogni spirituale sa, il corpo è in stretta connessione con la natura, e non a caso la sua opera artistica più nota ed apprezzata è stata creata nella natura. Sto parlando di Silueta Serie, un centinaio di performance che la Mendieta ha elaborato col suo stesso corpo nella natura tra il Messico e l’Iowa tra il 1973 -1980. Ad oggi rimangono foto e filmati in 16mm delle sue performance.
Con Silueta Serie
Mendieta vuole rappresentare il corpo della donna, che è il tempio dell’energia femminile, connesso alla Madre Terra. Scolpiva, bruciava o tracciava la sagoma del suo corpo. Le diverse forme delle sagome rappresentavano la fusione tra cielo e terra, e le sagome galleggianti sull’acqua definivano lo spazio tra terra e mare. I materiali naturali usati: fiori, rami, muschio, polvere da sparo, fuoco, sangue e acqua.
Tra i molti messaggi che la Mendieta ci ha lasciato con Silueta Serie, vorrei far risuonare quello della nostra caducità, questo passaggio terreno nel quale viviamo, preghiamo, e inevitabilmente torneremo alla terra, facendo sparire ogni nostra traccia (di bene e di male.) Ancora con questa cosa che faccio del male? Cos’è ti si è incantato il disco?
Se riuscissimo a ricordare ogni giorno che siamo di passaggio sulla Terra, saremmo in Pace con noi stessi e con gli altri. Ma ammetto che è un lavoro mentale difficile, onestamente ci provo ma con scarsi risultati, e da come va la società non sono la sola. E forse esserne consapevoli è già un passo avanti. Pensa se fossimo stati tronfi anche del falso mito che va tutto bene.
E a proposito di campi e di connessione spirituale, vi lascio con una massima di un mistico persiano:
“Là fuori, oltre a ciò che è giusto e sbagliato, esiste un campo immenso. Ci incontreremo lì.”
Sì, anch’io mi unisco a queste parole di Speranza, con l’augurio di ritrovarci alla fine di questo esilio, in un luogo dove non ci saranno più contese per poter vivere finalmente in Pace, che dopo un’esistenza così travagliata, ce lo meritiamo.
ANA MENDIETA: WHERE THE BODY, NATURE AND ART TAKE SHAPE
In a society that has exploited women’s bodies for every conceivable purpose – a practice almost always passed off as emancipation, or even more sadly as art (I am, of course, referring to those glossy and exclusive calendars) – I present Ana Mendieta. A performer, artist and woman with deep spiritual roots.
With a background in classical painting, she found her artistic expression in Body Art and Land Art, through which she brought her South American spirituality to the fore. She was born in Cuba in 1948 but lived the rest of her life in America. Two different lifestyles, yet both necessary for her to become the artist we all admire;
it is through her artistic output that she sought to heal the wounds of this exile.
As every spiritual person knows, the body is closely connected to nature, and it is no coincidence that her best-known and most acclaimed artistic work was created in nature. I am referring to the Silueta Series, a hundred performances that Mendieta created using her own body in natural settings across Mexico and Iowa between 1973 and 1980. To this day, photographs and 16mm film footage of her performances remain.
With the Silueta Series
Mendieta sought to represent the female body, which is the temple of feminine energy, connected to Mother Earth. She sculpted, burned or traced the outline of her body. The various shapes of the silhouettes represented the fusion of sky and earth, and the silhouettes floating on water defined the space between land and sea. The natural materials used: flowers, branches, moss, gunpowder, fire, blood and water.
Among the many messages Mendieta has left us with Silueta Serie, I would like to highlight that of our transience, this earthly passage in which we live, pray, and will inevitably return to the earth, erasing every trace of ourselves (both good and bad). Am I still doing this thing that causes harm? What’s the matter, has the record got stuck?
If we could remember every day that we are merely passing through on Earth, we would be at peace with ourselves and with others. But I admit it’s a difficult mental task; honestly, I try but with little success, and judging by the state of society, I’m not the only one. And perhaps simply being aware of this is already a step forward. Just imagine if we’d been deluded by the false myth that everything is fine.
And speaking of fields and spiritual connection, I’ll leave you with a maxim from a Persian mystic:
“Out there, beyond what is right and wrong, there is an immense field. We shall meet there.”
Yes, I too join in these words of hope, with the wish that we may find one another at the end of this exile, in a place where there will be no more strife, so that we may finally live in peace – which, after such a troubled existence, we deserve.
