Ogni tanto ripenso a quel periodo storico, a quanta infamità c’era in ognuno. E quell’esecuzione fatta senza starci tanto a pensare veniva fatta davanti a tutti.
THE CREATIVE PROCESS BEHIND THE BAXTER BLOG: IS IT RIGHT-WING OR LEFT-WING? BAXTER IS INDEPENDENT
Today’s post is dedicated to the creative process behind the Baxter blog, and this time I want to clarify my socio-political views. Whether you’ve been reading the Baxter blog since the very first post or have only recently started, you may have noticed that I often criticise the left, and that there are certain issues close to my heart that I won’t compromise on, such as abortion or surrogacy being passed off as a right. That said, does this mean I’m on the right? I certainly don’t think so!
I’ve never attacked the right in my articles because, quite frankly, it’s not part of my ideals. Unlike some people, I don’t need an enemy to create a group. I don’t identify with the ideals of the right, especially the far right, which longs for the old days – an Italy gripped by darkness and the oppression of violence.
I find it laughable when people look back on and yearn for the ‘upbringing’ of those times, but alas, the fear instilled by oppression and violence is not upbringing, let alone respect.
So what do we do? Where do we place the Baxter Blog?
Yes, human beings need to categorise everything or person they encounter. It’s primal. It’s human. I need to understand who you are and where I should place you; my life depends on it. You could be like a poisonous weed; you might even look lovely, but if I ate you, I could die! The same goes for animals. But how beautiful is a tiger? It’s fascinating, and it must certainly feel lovely to stroke it, but alas, it’s a wild and deadly aggressive animal. Do you see what I mean?
And the same thing happens with people. Think about it. We’re always ourselves, but our personality has been the reason some people have wanted to be friends with us, whilst for others it’s been the start of a major annoyance, which over the years has turned into hatred. So what do you do? You make a choice. First and foremost, you have to choose whether to live a life of peace or a life of torment. Yes, you read that right, because for years I’ve been seeing people who want to be accepted by those who don’t approve of them. But what’s the point in that? Society is so vast and diverse that everyone can find their own group and live in peace, yet no—people wage ideological and social war against their opponents.
Let me give an example just to clarify. For years I’ve seen the gay community waging war on the Catholic Church, demanding that it change and accept their nature. But I say, it’s the institution you hate most of all, the one that professes the opposite of your way of life – what’s the point of waging war on it? Isn’t the world big enough for us all to coexist?
And this is another point I’d like to reflect on with you. Since the dawn of time, there has been a section of society – driven by politics or religion – that goes off on a tangent, claiming the right to force change upon those peoples living either in debauchery or in backwardness. From East to West, there is a presumption of knowing what is best for others, and a thirst for power and domination that has persisted for millennia. We’re fed up.
And yes, because the truth is that ordinary people are fed up, and just want to live in peace. They’re fed up with being exploited by marketing that promotes impossible and dehumanising lifestyles. We’re fed up with politics that no longer produces anything good, and whose sole aim is to stir up a row. Thank God, people have changed; political hatred has remained the stronghold of a few small groups, which, however small, must be feared like a cigarette butt thrown onto a path overgrown with weeds. Yes, because this weary and stressed society has become barren and uncultivated ground, devoid of empathy, yet feeling a great sense of annoyance for which it must find a scapegoat.
It is a truly strange and, alas, difficult period in history. We lack empathy, faith and honesty, and we are unable to take responsibility for what is happening. Never a ‘mea culpa’ – from the head of state to the lowest member of society, each of us points the finger at someone else for what is happening. From government crises to wars, right down to the personal problems of us mere mortals. It’s a bloodbath.
On Monday evening I watched the film *The Tasters*, set during the Second World War, and in that film too – as in others dealing with that historical period – I noticed a common thread: no one took responsibility for what they were doing. It was always orders coming from above. And another common thread was psychological distress, especially amongst those carrying out those abominable orders. Inflicting harm – whether we want to or are ordered to – hurts both the victim and the perpetrator.
Every now and then I think back to that period in history, to just how much depravity there was in everyone. Yes, because even living under the oppression of witnessing evil and being unable to protest leaves its mark. Those times, of which we are left with only historical footage and films, were terrible; being a hero or a rebel meant dying by a bullet. And that execution, carried out without a second thought, took place in full view of everyone. Just think what a shitty time it was: you had two options – alive and disgraced, or free and dead. And there are people who look back on those times with nostalgia.
But whether we regret it or not, the fact remains that that collective memory, those psychological wounds, those traumas have been passed down from generation to generation – a sign that war brings nothing good, indeed that it’s something we miss, and that every so often we feel the need to engage in it, as if it were a void to be filled.
That said, is it really important to know whether someone is on the right or the left? Because I’m sorry to say, but Blog Baxter is run by a free woman who has no problem identifying as a feminist, whilst disagreeing with the wickedness of abortion or surrogacy. Blog Baxter’s motto is: ‘it has no masters’, with the subtext: ‘those with common sense should use it’.
