SOPHIA CAMPANA: A CHAMPION WITHOUT BOUNDARIES
Today’s article is dedicated to Sophia Campana, the Italian-American artistic gymnast. I didn’t know her; I’d never seen her compete, as I’m not a fan of the sport, but every now and then her videos would pop up on my Instagram feed. Seeing her practise and practise her routines again and again with such determination and humour really struck a chord with me. After all, we’re used to seeing them only in competition, when everything has to be perfect, but she chose to be authentic, to show herself in the process of perfecting those highly skilful routines.
One thing I didn’t know about Sophia Campana is that she was a victim of psychological abuse at the hands of some coaches – an attitude from the past, deemed acceptable for those training champions. And this, alas, is what was once considered acceptable and part of the training process even in the world of dance, but I’ll leave that topic there.
Instead, I must thank this new generation of athletes and dance teachers who abhor this stereotype of training.
For some years now, many of them have been speaking out on social media, showing that determination is there and must be there to reach certain levels of artistic perfection, whilst leaving frustration and insults behind. Because we all know that a gymnast, just like a dancer, needs to be slim, but emphasising the physical appearance of a 10-year-old girl or making her feel guilty because she had biscuits for breakfast causes psychological harm.
So Sophia Campana has come through this stage of her artistic development, winning the most important competitions in artistic gymnastics for both America and Italy. And having become an international champion, she has decided to become an ambassador for the healthy side of this sport, creating a community of young girls who practise the same sport as her, as well as organising books and meet-ups in gyms all over the world.
What strikes and inspires me about Sophia Campana is the passion she puts into achieving the result she wants.
You’ll find plenty of videos on her Instagram profile, where she pays tribute to routines performed by gymnasts of the past, and stubbornly keeps trying until she gets it right. Put like that, it all seems very easy; in fact, she even laughs about it when she falls or bangs herself on the parallel bars. Not to mention when she shows her hands, with open, bleeding blisters. But at the end of the video, after many attempts, she manages to pull it off and celebrates wildly.
Even though I don’t follow artistic gymnastics, and I didn’t know Sophia Campana for her talent, I can’t deny that she inspires me immensely. Because that passion and determination set an example in many different areas of life. Above all, it shows that to achieve something – and in her case, something difficult – you need training and determination, because things don’t happen at the first attempt. The truth is, you need to try countless times before that routine… or that book… is perfected.
And if even a champion like her faces obstacles, who am I to give up?
That is why I wanted to dedicate this article to this great Italian-American champion, because her mission has transcended the boundaries of artistic gymnastics – a sign of her powerful example, a sign of that fire burning within a woman who is an inspiration to all other women. And by revealing her humanity – not just her sporting side – she has shown the sacrifice behind such virtuosity, in a competition that hinges on a two-minute routine.
For far too long, we’ve been conditioned to see – but above all, alas, to believe – that it’s possible to achieve everything at once.
No, the things that matter in life require many attempts and determination, a great deal of hard work and sacrifice, and that bloody time – which, today, we can no longer find room for or appreciate.
